New Trailer for THE BFG!

Disney (sigh) just released the new trailer for THE BFG, a film based on the popular children’s novel by Roald Dahl about a girl name Sophie and her adventures with a Big Friendly Giant.

The film has a powerhouse crew, with Steven Spielberg directing and bringing along his usual team of stone-cold pros: Janusz Kaminiski (cinematography), Michael Kahn (editing), and John Williams (original score). Weta Digital (THE LORD OF THE RINGS) is doing the visual effects. Additionally, the screenplay is written by Melissa Mathison (E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL), so we can’t help but expect great things from this movie.

Mark Rylance plays the BFG; we saw him recently in Spielberg’s BRIDGE OF SPIES and he gave a fantastic performance. We look forward to seeing him next year in the role of a giant!

See the trailer below:

THE BFG comes to theatres on July 1, 2016. It also stars Penelope Wilton, Bill Hader, Rebecca Hall, Jemaine Clement, and Ruby Barnhill.

Review: Hamilton Khaki Aviation Swiss Automatic Watch H76565835

Looking for an entry into the world of Swiss watches? There’s the Tissot I reviewed a while back. There’s also Hamilton, a brand with proud American origins, having provided timekeeping devices for the American railroads during the rail expansion of the late 1800s, as well as for U.S. troops during World War II.

EDIT: Added new video review below!

Hamilton was eventually acquired by Swatch Group, and moved their manufacturing to Switzerland. Like Tissot, Hamilton is a reputable and well-known name in Swiss watches, yet won’t kill your wallet (too much). The brand is notably a favorite among filmmakers and can be seen during critical plot points in several movies, from MEN IN BLACK to BURIED to INTERSTELLAR, making it a popular household name in watchmaking.

Review: Carter Wingtip Boots by Jack Erwin

I got these Carter wingtip combat boots from Jack Erwin a while ago and gave them a good test run. I wear them to work or school when I have to ride the motorcycle.

Review: Tuft and Needle Mattress and DIY Oak Bed Frame

I was really hoping to provide a photo of a pristine, model bedroom. Instead, you get the mess you see here. I’ll explain later but you have to keep reading.

Following up on my earlier post: After a lot of deliberation and discussion with Yoselin from 6 Mono Media, I settled on purchasing the Tuft and Needle mattress, and dropped it into the brand new, solid oak bed frame that I designed and built!

So how is it? Keep reading!

Beater Review: Seiko 5 Sports SNZG13 Automatic Field Watch

The best watch ever. EVER.

The Seiko 5 is maybe the best watch ever made. I mean it. THE BEST.

In fact, there are countless varieties of the Seiko 5. Mine is the SNZG13 sports watch, and it is the best out of all of them. I’ve had it for several years, as you can see from the beating it has taken in the photo. I own a few other watches, and although I might not be wearing it to the wedding, this is the one I otherwise wear every day.

EDIT: Added a new video review below!

There isn’t a better timepiece out there. If you can only get one watch, you shouldn’t have to look anywhere else. Here’s why.

New Mattress Decisions – Tuft and Needle, Casper, or Leesa?

EDIT: Settled on the Tuft and Needle. See my review here, or watch my video review below.

In preparation for my upcoming marriage to Yoselin from 6 Mono Media, one of the projects I am working on is the construction of a new bed. That’s right, I am designing and building my own bed. (Instructions and/or progress on the project will be posted on this site soon.)

Most exciting for me is the fact that I’ll be able to toss the old innerspring mattress that I’ve been using since childhood. I want our future mattress to be awesome, so I’ve been doing a lot of research on the subject, especially foam mattresses, since I am tired of the creakiness and unevenness of springs.

I’ve come across a few different online mattress startups that have captured my interest: Tuft and Needle, Casper, and Leesa. All three feature American-made foam mattresses, generous risk-free trial periods, and what appear to be high-end materials and construction.

There is plenty of info about the different layers of proprietary foam that each mattress uses. You can check out the links to get more details, but the main takeaway I get from the research I’ve done is: Tuft and Needle is the firmest (which I like) and least expensive (which I also like); Leesa is the best “all-around” mattress, and also the most expensive; and Casper is the softest (not sure I like that) and priced somewhere between the other two.

You might have noticed from this site that I am all about value and saving money, but at the same time I am willing to invest in certain products that are worthwhile. People spend a third of their lives in bed, and the previous night’s sleep can greatly affect the rest of your day! All three options seem good, but if I’m going to be stuck with a mattress for 10 or more years, I want it to be INCREDIBLE!

I’ll most likely make my decision in a few weeks, when I finish building the bed frame, and I’ll be sure to post a review and photos here! In the meantime, if you have experience yourself with any of these products, leave a comment below!

EDIT: Settled on the Tuft and Needle. See my review here.

Shotgun Showdown: Remington 870 vs Mossberg 500

I visited my folks last week and finally got the chance to try out my dad’s new Mossberg 500 “Persuader” 12-gauge shotgun.

I own the Remington 870 and I’ve shot some other Remington shotguns, but I had never fired the Mossberg before, so I was quite curious to see how this one held up to mine. Here’s what I found.

New Mad Max: Fury Road Trailer Released

George Miller’s upcoming film, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult, has a new trailer, and it looks incredible!

Miller is the creator and director of the original MAD MAX films, starring Mel Gibson. The first MAD MAX was a blast, even on a low budget and with unintelligible Australian accents. This trailer looks like Miller has kicked it up ten notches.

Have you seen the original MAD MAX movies? How do you think this new one will compare?
