The watch

Hamilton watches are a Hollywood favorite, frequently appearing in high-profile movies, from MEN IN BLACK to INTERSTELLAR and most recently INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE.

We previously featured a more casual looking watch from Hamilton, the Khaki Aviation watch. Like that watch, the Khaki Navy Sub is Swiss made, with an automatic movement, so it winds itself automatically using natural arm movements. (It can also be manually wound with the crown.)

However, since the Khaki Navy Sub is a diving watch, there are a few unique features that differentiate it from the Khaki Aviation: a larger case diameter (42mm), larger hour markings, a higher depth rating (300m/1000ft), and a screw-down crown. There’s also a uni-directional rotating bezel to help you keep track of your dive time – you know, if you actually dive.

No one will question your masculinity every again!

The watch crystal is scratch-resistant sapphire. Instead of a see-through caseback (a popular feature on automatic watches), the Khaki Navy Sub has a cool engraving of a manta ray in stainless steel. Although I love being able to see the internal gears of an automatic watch, this nifty engraving isn’t a bad tradeoff.

Who doesn’t want a manta ray engraving on their watch???

Additionally, Hamilton has cleverly sneaked their “H” insignia onto the watch, like on the crown and on the clasp. Even the bracelet links are shaped like the letter H.

Other neat touches include a black dial with carbon-fiber-esque texturing, lume on the hands and hour markings (so they glow in the dark), and a big “0” at the 12 o’clock position instead of a “12,” harking back to its roots as as a military-inspired watch. A calendar date function is also featured (somewhat unusually) at the 6 o’clock position.

This is a relatively large and heavy watch, but not obnoxiously so. If you like your watches big and substantial this will be right up your alley; if you like low-profile and lightweight, you will be better off with the Khaki Aviation or an Edox watch. With its combination of stainless steel and black, it is extremely versatile and can be worn less casually (like with a suit) than the Khaki Aviation.

Note the “H”-shaped links.

Conclusion

Because of its functionality, readability, adaptable style, and straight-up manliness, the Hamilton Khaki Navy Sub automatic watch has made its way into my current rotation, along with my trusty Seiko. I also have an upgraded chronograph version that I’ll review soon as well. Highly recommended.

PROS: Super cool and masculine looking. Very functional. Nice details. Swiss made quality.

CONS: Might be too heavy for some.
