How to: DIY Oil Change for 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i (Or Really Any Car)

My car, back in the day.

Changing your engine oil is probably the single most important form of maintenance you can do for your car, so it’s a good idea to learn how to do it yourself.

This gun gets fired several times throughout the film.

If you haven’t seen DREDD 3D: it’s a wildly entertaining action movie that is extra fun in 3D. Amazon has it on sale for $6, a smoking deal. Free shipping with Amazon Prime.

DREDD 3D stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Heady, and is directed by Pete Travis.

Now I kind of want to watch this again tonight.

Review: Clarence Toe Cap Brogue Dress Shoes by Charles Tyrwhitt

EDIT: The Clarence brogues are now being phased out and appear to have been replaced by the Parker brogues. As far as I can tell they are the same shoe, just with a different name. The links in this review will now direct you to the Parkers.

If you are a shoe n00b like I am, you probably wear the same pair of black dress shoes all the time – to work, church, interviews, weddings, and ship christenings. Well, stop! You shouldn’t be wearing black shoes very often at all. Black shoes go best with black pants, and why in the world would you wear those, unless there’s a dead guy in a casket somewhere in the room or you’re at a wedding (specifically, your own)? Take it down a notch and relax for once in your life with some gray, blue, or brown pants.

Now that you’ve ditched the funeral pants, there’s no need to dampen the party again with those black kicks. You should be busting out the brown!

Brown shoes go really well with gray, blue, or brown pants – way better than black shoes do. I somehow got my hands on these Clarence Parker semi-brogue oxfords from Charles Tyrwhitt. Keep reading to find out whether they are worth a hoot or not!

How to Choose Good Dress Shoes

Hideous, no? Tragically, this kind of junk was my “dressy” footwear for the better part of three decades.

For most of my life I have been buying the wrong dress shoes. As I noted in an earlier post, I have been on a quest to find dress shoes that aren’t total garbage (see the above image). This search has turned out to be quite educational for me.

How to Save Money on Eating Out

OMG. Oh my gouda. (Gouda not pictured.)

Dining out at restaurants is expensive. Like really expensive. Even if you go with “cheap” options like fast food, you are still spending at least 99 cents on a drink that costs less than a penny to make (about five-thousandths of a cent, to be exact). If you opt for more expensive offerings at dine-in restaurants, you can easily drop ten or twenty bucks (or more – especially if you order alcoholic beverages – more on that later).

The best way to save money on eating out is by… eating at home! Surprise! No really, wait, there’s more to this strategy.

CNN Doomsday Video

The end of the world, according to TITAN A.E.

The good people over at CNN are dedicated to providing you with a live news feed right up to the moment when Earth is consumed by the death rays of a rampaging alien species.

According to Jalopnik, Ted Turner vowed that the last event ever covered on his news network would be the end of the world. At that point, he says, the final transmission will be a standard-definition recording of “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” supposedly the last song played by the band on the sinking RMS Titanic.

As civilizations crumble and the continents are engulfed by the rising tides of molten lava issuing forth from broken crust of the Earth, some noble CNN intern will, in the final throes of an excruciating death by fire and asphyxiation, slam the big red button that plays the grainy-ass video to a dying world.

Shotgun Showdown: Remington 870 vs Mossberg 500

I visited my folks last week and finally got the chance to try out my dad’s new Mossberg 500 “Persuader” 12-gauge shotgun.

I own the Remington 870 and I’ve shot some other Remington shotguns, but I had never fired the Mossberg before, so I was quite curious to see how this one held up to mine. Here’s what I found.

Shark Attack in Morro Bay

I picked up a 35mm f/1.8 prime from the deal that I posted a couple weeks ago (I already had this lens, but it was stolen) and took it for a spin in Morro Bay, CA. Turns out there was a shark attack yesterday; we just missed it.

Apparently the birds don’t care.

EDIT: This lens, and the 50mm f/1.8 prime I mentioned in a previous post, are both on sale again. Don’t miss out!
