New Mattress Decisions – Tuft and Needle, Casper, or Leesa?

EDIT: Settled on the Tuft and Needle. See my review here, or watch my video review below.

In preparation for my upcoming marriage to Yoselin from 6 Mono Media, one of the projects I am working on is the construction of a new bed. That’s right, I am designing and building my own bed. (Instructions and/or progress on the project will be posted on this site soon.)

Most exciting for me is the fact that I’ll be able to toss the old innerspring mattress that I’ve been using since childhood. I want our future mattress to be awesome, so I’ve been doing a lot of research on the subject, especially foam mattresses, since I am tired of the creakiness and unevenness of springs.

I’ve come across a few different online mattress startups that have captured my interest: Tuft and Needle, Casper, and Leesa. All three feature American-made foam mattresses, generous risk-free trial periods, and what appear to be high-end materials and construction.

There is plenty of info about the different layers of proprietary foam that each mattress uses. You can check out the links to get more details, but the main takeaway I get from the research I’ve done is: Tuft and Needle is the firmest (which I like) and least expensive (which I also like); Leesa is the best “all-around” mattress, and also the most expensive; and Casper is the softest (not sure I like that) and priced somewhere between the other two.

You might have noticed from this site that I am all about value and saving money, but at the same time I am willing to invest in certain products that are worthwhile. People spend a third of their lives in bed, and the previous night’s sleep can greatly affect the rest of your day! All three options seem good, but if I’m going to be stuck with a mattress for 10 or more years, I want it to be INCREDIBLE!

I’ll most likely make my decision in a few weeks, when I finish building the bed frame, and I’ll be sure to post a review and photos here! In the meantime, if you have experience yourself with any of these products, leave a comment below!

EDIT: Settled on the Tuft and Needle. See my review here.

Open Letter to Associated Students UCI (ASUCI)

To Associated Students UCI,

Re: Resolution R50-70

The recent decision to remove the American flag from the Associated Students main lobby is tragic and misguided.

It is alarming that such a resolution could be passed based on such thin backing as the (unsupported) perception that there is a global disdain for the flag of the United States.

While it is true that some of the actions of this country have at times been viewed with negativity, none of that changes what the flag stands for: freedom and opportunity. As far as I know, President Obama still keeps the flag waving over the White House. Or do you think he stuffs it into a drawer first before inviting foreign leaders into the Oval Office?

My dad came to the United States in 1967 with little more than the clothes on his back. This country gave him a scholarship, an education, a family, and the opportunity to make a life for himself – privileges that were robbed of him in his own home country when the communist Chinese regime took everything, executing family members, stripping them of their business, and leaving the survivors penniless. America offered him citizenship, thrust the sledgehammer of industry into his hands, and told him, “give it your best shot.” And he did.

The United States, for all its shortcomings, is still one of the most hospitable nations in the world. It freely invites students from all over the globe to learn at its best universities, and welcomes millions of immigrants each year, from every socioeconomic class, to come pursue their dreams of a better life. How many other countries can claim that?

The international students at UCI who are supposedly offended by the American flag are here because they want to be; they regard our educational system with respect and see the value in the ideals of the United States. All this is afforded them through the generosity of the American government and its people – and we are absolutely better for it. You can be certain that these students realize what an incredible opportunity they have been given, to be part of a process that is so integral to making this nation so successful. The flag is our way of saying, “Welcome to the United States.” You should be proud to stand behind those stripes.

My dad, while acknowledging China’s crimes, has never been ashamed of its flag because he knows that it stands for something greater – its culture and heritage, the strength of its people, and the hope that they can always become a better nation. He feels the same way about the United States, only more so. “All that pot-smoking must have damaged their brains,” he says (of you). “If they take down the flag, I’ll put it back up myself.” Well, there you have it.

There may come a day when the American flag causes us embarrassment and shame. But good lord, that hasn’t happened yet. It’s still OK to be proud to be American.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Yip

Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015)

Take a moment today to remember Leonard Nimoy. Seriously.

Nimoy died this morning at the age of 83. Iconic in the role of Spock in the original TV series, STAR TREK, he portrayed the character in its various sequels and spinoffs for over 40 years. He also skillfully directed a few of the films as well (including my personal favorite, STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME).

The relationship between Spock and Kirk sums up the definition of true, hard-earned friendship – never with emotional outpourings of bromance, but rather with dignified, even restrained, sacrificial love. When Spock, separated from Kirk by the radiation-proof glass of the warp core, deadpans, “I have been, and always shall be, your friend,” you know he means it.

A great loss of a bona fide legend. Live long and prosper!

Review: Kenneth Cole New York Automatic Watch KC8100

A few months ago while browsing at Macy’s, my fiancee landed eyes on the watch display and insisted that I get one to wear for the wedding. (The watch I’ve been wearing every day for the last several years is a Seiko 5 automatic, which is an awesome piece, but not particularly elegant.)

Most of the watches at Macy’s are “fashion watches” – known mainly for their brand recognition and how fancy and/or blingy they look, rather than their actual quality or heritage. Some of these brands include Diesel, Fossil, and Kenneth Cole.

She fell in love with one of the pieces from Kenneth Cole New York, so in classic PRAKTICALA style, I went home, worked my magic, and finagled a smoking deal on it. A few days later I had a package at my front door.

The Unexpected Virtue of Slow Movies

You need to give slow movies a chance.

A long time ago, most movies were “slow,” at least by today’s standards. They took their time doing things silly things like investing in character development and establishing a believable world within the story.

Deal: Studio Ghibli + Miyazaki Blu-rays on Amazon

Amazon has a smoking deal right now on a bunch of Blu-rays from Studio Ghibli and master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. If you haven’t seen any of Miyazaki’s movies, this is the perfect opportunity to catch up on some of the greatest animated films in history. Or, if you’re already a fan, now is a good time to pick up some of his films that you’ve missed, since they rarely go on sale. They are definitely worth keeping.

A few of my favorites:

My Neighbor Totoro (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Princess Mononoke [Blu-ray]

The Wind Rises (2-Disc Blu-ray +DVD Combo Pack)

What is your favorite Miyazaki movie?

Review: Polo Ralph Lauren Lander P Sneaker – Wear Those Boat Shoes!

PRAKTICALA has a bunch of other things to do besides talk about shoes all day, but I was able to snag an incredible deal on these Polo Ralph Lauren Lander P boat shoes and figured somebody ought to hear about it.

Boat shoes are one of those items that are super old school and always considered to be in style, but at the same time seem to weave back and forth between enjoying widespread popularity (I hesitate to use the “F” word because I dislike FADS) and being on the backburner. Lately, boat shoes have been leaning towards the former, although I think they are beginning to slow down again as a trend (which is good).

Bailey’s Coffee Creamer

I have been drinking more coffee recently – partly because it helps me stay alert in business school, partly because I am trying to be more “refined,” and partly because it just tastes good!

During a recent trip to the grocery store, I stumbled upon this:

No, you aren’t seeing things. Bailey’s makes an Irish coffee creamer for use in the comfort of your own home or office!

I probably don’t need to educate you on Bailey’s, but for the uninitiated, Bailey’s is a popular and delicious Irish cream liqueur. I guess some genius at the company came up with the bright idea to bring that distinctive flavor to coffee so we could enjoy it in the morning too! (It’s non-alcoholic.)

I brewed up some coffee and poured in a liberal dosage of Bailey’s Coffee Creamer. Sure enough, the taste evokes the characteristic essence of the liqueur, but is still tuned nicely for coffee. If your local market carries it, give it a try!
